A note on the names
Bed names above King size are not standardized, and different manufacturers use the same names for different beds. Ours are built to order, so the measurements on this page are what you receive. When comparing between retailers, compare the numbers rather than the names.
Best for: families who sleep together, two adults who want genuine separation, anyone sharing the bed with children or pets.
Not for: extra length. It is standard King length.
What is a California King bed?
Width: 72 inches
Length: 84 inches
It is the longest of the widely available sizes, and it is narrower than a standard King. That is the trade: you gain 4 inches of length and give up 4 inches of width.
Best for: taller sleepers, roughly 6 feet 2 and above, narrow bedrooms, and anyone who would rather have length than width.
Not for: sharing with children and pets. It is the narrowest bed in this comparison.

There is no overall winner here. There is only which problem you are trying to solve.
Difference 1: width against length
A Florida King gives you 36 more inches of width than a California King, and 4 fewer inches of length.
What that means in practice:
- Florida King. Three or four people can lie across it comfortably. Two adults get roughly 54 inches each, which is wider than a full bed apiece.
- California King. One tall person can stretch out completely without their feet reaching the end.
Difference 2: who each bed is designed for
Choose a Florida King if:
- You share the bed with children or pets
- Two adults want real separation
- Width is what you keep running out of
Choose a California King if:
- Someone in the bed is over about 6 feet 2
- Your bedroom is longer than it is wide
- Feet reaching the end of the mattress is the actual complaint

Difference 3: bedroom size
A Florida King is 9 feet wide, so the room has to carry it.
Florida King. Minimum 14 by 12 feet, ideally 16 by 14 or larger.
California King. Minimum 10 by 12 feet, ideally 12 by 14.
This is where most people get caught out. Measure the room before you fall in love with a size.
Difference 4: mattress and bedding
Florida King. The mattress is a custom size, and bedding is made to order rather than bought off a shelf. That is the trade for a bed this wide.
California King. Mattresses and bedding are available everywhere, in every price range.
Difference 5: price
A Florida King costs more. It is a larger frame, a custom mattress, and custom bedding.
A California King sits in normal premium territory, and because the size is common, the mattress and bedding are competitively priced.
Comfort, honestly
A Florida King feels like it removes the question of space entirely. Nobody negotiates, nobody gets woken up, and a child climbing in at 3am changes nothing.
A California King feels roomy for one or two people and lets a tall person sleep properly for the first time in years. It does not feel enormous, because it is not.
