Two different problems
People shopping for an oversized bed are usually solving one of two problems, and they are not the same problem.
The first is width. Two adults, sometimes a child who appears at 3am, usually a dog. Everyone negotiates for space and nobody sleeps well.
The second is length. Someone in the bed is tall enough that their feet reach the end of the mattress.
These need different beds. Most oversized bed guides blur the two together, and that is how people end up ordering the wrong size.
What is a Texas King bed?
A Texas King is an oversized bed measuring 98 inches wide by 80 inches long. Standard King length, with close to two extra feet of width.
For scale, a standard King is 76 inches wide. A Texas King gives you 22 inches more than that, which is roughly the width of an additional adult.
A note on the name
Bed names above King size are not standardized, and different manufacturers sell different beds under the same name. You will find sources that define a Texas King as 80 inches wide by 98 inches long, the same figures the other way round.

These two get compared constantly, and they solve opposite problems. The Texas King is 26 inches wider. The California King is 4 inches longer.
If the person in the bed is over roughly 6 feet 2, the California King is the one that helps, and no amount of extra width will change that.

Texas and Florida King are both width sizes. The Alaskan King is the one that adds length as well, at 108 inches square, and it is the only bed in this group that suits a very tall sleeper who also wants space.
Who should buy a Texas King?
It is a good fit if:
- Two adults want a lane each
- Your children end up in your bed
- You share the bed with dogs
- You wake up when your partner moves
It is the wrong size if you are taller than about 6 feet 2. What you need is length, and this bed has standard King length. Look at a California King, or an Alaskan King if you want length and width together. We can also build a custom length.
That is worth saying plainly: we would rather lose the sale than sell you a bed your feet hang off.

Texas King mattress guide
A 98 inch wide mattress is a custom size, so it is worth choosing carefully.
Memory foam. Good pressure relief, and it isolates movement well, which suits a bed this wide being shared by several people.
Hybrid. Balanced support and comfort, usually the safest choice for two adults with different preferences.
Latex. Durable, and it sleeps cooler than most foams.
What to look for: 10 to 14 inches of thickness, medium-firm support, and cooling features if anyone in the bed sleeps warm.

Leave 2 to 3 feet of walking space on the sides you need to walk down. If the bed is against a wall, you only need clearance on one side, which makes a narrower room workable.
Styling an oversized bed
Use a large rug. A bed this wide will make a small rug look like a doormat. Go wider than you think.
Give it a statement headboard. At 98 inches the headboard is the largest object in the room, so it is worth choosing properly.
Keep the walls light. It makes the remaining floor space read as larger.
